25^th Chapter History for the Silver Anniversary South Country Slide-In

For 25 years the challenge has gone out to horseman across the West to bring their best game plan to Cardston, Alberta in the hopes of being crowned a Champion of the South Country Slide-In. Founded in 1984 by Cardston natives Linn Jensen and Morgan Lybbert, the Cardston Futurity was originally a working cow horse and Alberta Reined Cow Horse Association sanctioned show, then developed to including reining competition, and at one time even offered a cutting horse Derby. As the popularity of the National Reining Horse Association intensified in the latter 80’s, the focus of the Futurity meshed with the surge of interest in the sport of reining, and the name and format of the South Country Slide-In was born in 1990.

Since that revamp, it has been heard many times from those who know what it takes to become a champion. “You had better come prepared if you want to win at Cardston.” This year was no exception, with many thrilling runs and tangible camaraderie exhibited by reiners in attendance. 265 entries competed for over $30,000 in prizes, payouts and the chance to be crowned the Mill Store High Point Horse Champion. That prestigious honor went to the great horse Trademark Whiz, a 10 year old chestnut gelding by Topsail Whiz out of Angels Rosie, owned by Julie Cook, Whitecourt, Alberta. What a display of talent and training for this horse to rise to the occasion with Open rider Ralph Ament Jr. scoring a 145.5 to place second in the NRHA Open and win the Limited Open, then also carry Non Pro rider Julie to place fourth in the Limited Non Pro and win the Rookie! The beautiful custom reining saddle was proudly presented to Trademark Whiz and company by long time supporter Tyson Lybbert, manager of The Mill Store, Okotoks, Alberta which sponsored the High Point Horse saddle.

The Premier Event, the Cardston Agricultural Society 3 Year Old Open Futurity Champion title went to Solanos Tag Chex and rider Vicki Braun, whom were awarded with the very prestigious NRHA Lawson Bronze and over $2800 in cash. This gorgeous 3 year old chestnut stallion, sired by Whiz N Tag Chex out of Solanos Miss Cody, owned by Tricia Banks, Swift Current, Saskatchewan laid down a thrilling ride, scoring a 146.5. Vicki’s dad Roger Heintz was in attendance to proudly watch his daughter capture the futurity title that has eluded her for many years, and the championship could not have gone to a more deserving recipient. Congratulations Vicki, Tricia and Solanos Tag Chex!

The 3 Year Old Limited Open Futurity Champion was captured by the bay stallion Loveable Nic and Cheryl Mitchell, Edmonton, Alberta. Judges Dr. Jim Morgan and Don Burkinshaw also “felt the love” with Loveable Nic’s performance and scored the team a 144 to win the Limited Open and place second in the Open Futurity. Loveable Nic is owned by Jayne Shamchuk of Edmonton, Alberta and is sired by Tinsel Nic out of the mare Loveable Lena.

Diane Latrace and Wright to Slide solidified the right to win with outstanding sliding stops and rollbacks to capture the 3 & 4 Year Old Non Pro Championship. The 4 year old mare, owned by husband Jon Latrace is sired by their very own stallion Isle Slide Wright On, out of the mare Eldorado De Oro. Diane had a smile that lit up the arena when announcer Ron Anderson announced the score of 142.5! That score held up through the rest of the Non Pro competition and gave Diane and Wright to Slide the championship title. Nice ride Diane!

So many other highlights and worthy champions were crowned as a part of the story that is now the 25^th Anniversary South Country Slide-In, including the Team Tournament Challenge, proudly sponsored by long time supporter Linn Jensen and Lone Pine Marketing, Cardston Alberta. The team challenge really brings riders together to cheer for each other throughout the competition, and it is so enjoyable to watch them monitoring the progress as points for the teams are posted. Coming out on top was a tie between Team # 14 Deb Duce, Cathy Yozipovic, Vanessa Noble and Vic Bennett and Team # 22 Clay Webster, Trudy Andrews, Ryan Burnett and Hailey Hagan.

As the editor for this article and show manager for the Slide-In I would like to take the printed opportunity to thank the horse industry, the Cardston community and the Cardston Agricultural Society for the incredible and generous thank you gift of a Duane Latimer reining saddle presented to me at the Opening Ceremonies in honor of 25 years of service. I was overwhelmed with the gracious gesture and I thank each and every one who contributed to bringing the idea to reality for me. 25 years is a significant amount of time by any measure, but over that timespan I have had the irreplaceable opportunity to be a part of many lives and stories over the years. I could not have persisted without knowing that maybe somehow I might have made a small difference to the people who honor the gift that exists between horse and rider, the industry itself and to the Cardston community. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
